How an Unshaven Hair Transplant Works

An unshaven or U-FUE hair transplant begins with the careful extraction of individual hair follicles from the side or back of the patient's head. Our technicians will isolate and remove each graft with minimally invasive technology, so that patients aren't required to shave their heads in order to reuse their hair follicles. Then the grafts are moved to the part of the head where the patient is balding or thinning. The procedure takes a fair amount of time and skill, but can be performed under safe circumstances in the hands of our capable surgeon.

Why Choose an Unshaven Hair Transplant?

Most standard hair transplants require the patient to have part or all of their head shaved so that surgeons can transplant a larger hair graft and achieve more permanent results. However, the thought of having one's head shaved can be a daunting prospect.

Fortunately, unshaven hair transplants are a more effective solution. Not only do patients get to keep the majority of their hair intact, but they're guaranteed to get the best care possible. A surgeon who performs this procedure has to be more skilled and attentive to detail than a specialist who only performs standard FUE hair transplants with required shaving. Finally, patients will also enjoy a gradual and less noticeable hair restoration over the course of the next 12 months.

Alternative Hair Treatments

While U-FUE hair transplants remain as effective as a shaved-head transplant procedure, we understand why some patients would be reluctant to pursue this option. Firstly, an U-FUE transplant is more expensive than the standard practice, as it requires more time and skilled labour to perform. In such cases, a good hair transplant surgeon has a duty to give patients a realistic view of each treatment and help them find the best option.

U-FUE Strip Correction

Some patients who have had strip hair transplants, such as the FUT treatment discussed below, come away with a noticeable scar where the strip of hair was removed for regrafting. This technique allows us to add hair follicles to the strip scar area, improving the patient's overall appearance and allowing them to wear their hair in a shorter style if they so choose.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

Before the development of follicular unit extraction (FUE), the original hair transplants were performed through a method called follicular unit transplantation (FUT). FUT is a surgically invasive procedure that removes part of the scalp and all the hair follicles attached to it, so that those follicles can be regrafted onto a bald area of the patient's head. Then the strip where the hair was removed is stitched back together, leaving a slight scar that can be covered up.

Meanwhile the new graft is inserted near the front of the patient's head to create a more natural hairline, with additional grafts placed near the back to give the patient the right amount of hair density.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

In the 1990's, surgeons were able to develop a less invasive procedure known as follicular unit extraction (FUE). Unlike FUT, an FUE transplant does not require removing any part of the scalp itself. Instead, the surgeon uses a 1-millimetre punch and forceps to create a small incision in the skin and remove each hair follicle individually. Then the individual follicles are regrafted onto the patient's bald spots in a natural progression.

Compared to FUT, this newer transplant involves less bleeding and can be performed with local anaesthetic, so fewer complications are guaranteed to happen. In addition, the end result is a more natural hairline, especially if used to cover up scarring from an FUT or other surgical procedure. Of course, a good surgeon should also list the downside to this method, such as the higher cost. An FUE transplant is more time-consuming, requiring more skilled labour from the technician to remove each follicle without traumatising them.
